Directed by Affleck, Air has earned rave reviews, with Variety declaring: ‘Ben Affleck turns Nike’s quest to sign Michael Jordan into this generation’s Jerry Maguire.’
Air Jordans were created for NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan during his time with the Chicago Bulls in 1984 and released to the public on April 1, 1985.
The film sees Matt Damon play sports exec Sonny Vaccaro as he hears about how both sales and growth in Nike’s basketball division are trending downward.
Nike founder Phil Knight, played by Affleck, tells Vaccaro to come up with a pitch for a new shoe, which leads him to have the idea of formulating a brand around upcoming player Michael Jordan.
Viola Davis, who stars as Michael Jordan’s mom in the film, praised Affleck as a director to the The Hollywood Reporter.
The veteran actress called making Air ‘an unbelievable experience that me and my husband and even my hair and makeup team still talk about to this day.’
She continued: ‘Ben’s an auteur and so unbelievably kind and respectful. It was one of our top experiences of being treated the way we felt we deserved to be treated.’
Affleck’s wife Jennifer Lopez has been very supportive of her husband’s surefire hit, as she posted a rave review from IndieWire and highlighted the phrase: ‘one of the best sports movies ever made.’

Speaking to IndieWire, Ben said that he loved working with his best friend and Good Will Hunting co-star Matt Damon, telling the outlet: ‘I love and trust Matt so much, and it was so lovely to be working together.’
‘It was kind of like a feeling of, I want the other actors to feel [this too],’ added the Armageddon star.
‘Like, “Come on, it’s all good, I love actors, I love you, you’re going to be OK, everyone, take as much time as you want, do what you need to do and be respected, and to kind of project that energy.”‘
Damon also relished the opportunity to be directed by his longtime collaborator, saying: ‘Honestly, it was kind of a natural progression. We’ve written a bunch of movies and produced and acted together for so many years and decades, so it didn’t feel any different, working this way.’
