I’m A Celeb returned for an action packed series on Monday as a whole host of iconic camp mates headed into the South African jungle.

Paul Burrell threw another Bushtucker trial meltdown during the premiere, to the dismay of viewers.

The former royal butler, 64, mirrored his horrified expressions from 19 years ago while getting stuck into a challenge in the new All Stars series in South Africa.

Taking up his position in the Hell Holes task, Paul joked: ‘How lovely for the first challenge to be putting my hand in a hole.’

But within seconds, he was squealing and shrieking after realising there were snakes inside – much to the annoyance of supermodel Janice Dickinson.

When he cried, ‘It’s gonna bite me,’ the TV personality hit back with, ‘If it doesn’t bite you, I will… shut up and look for the key!’

But viewers of the programme were left less than impressed by Paul’s antics, as they took to Twitter to accuse him of ‘being ridiculous’ and ‘overacting’.

One wrote, ‘Why’s Paul Burrell trying to recreate his 2004 meme. It was funny when it was authentic but now it’s just forced 😴 #ImACeleb.’

Others added, ‘Paul burrell is so overacting this we’ve seen this act before,’ and, ‘Paul Burrell is ridiculous #ImACeleb.’

Two more chimed in with, ‘Paul burrell is defo putting this on #ImACeleb,’ as well as, ‘What an actor Paul Burrell is #ImACeleb.’

Another concluded, ‘Paul Burrell give that man an Oscar #imaceleb.’

Elsewhere Helen Flanagan overcame her fear of heights while taking on the first challenge.

The show showed an overwhelmed Helen, 32, struggling to cope as she watched Fatima Whitbread take on the giant ball challenge, knowing that she was also going to have to do it herself.

The former Coronation Street star, who first took part in 2012, ‘felt sick’ and crouched on the floor as she watched Fatima fall from one of the balls.

She was safe and well thanks to her safety harness but it wasn’t easy seeing Fatima struggling to make her way across the obstacle course.

The challenge was branded the hardest one yet, with the trio only managing to get one star out of the three available.

Taking to Twitter, they shared their thoughts on Helen’s nervous demeanor while taking on the gruelling challenge.

One user wrote: ‘That last challenge was basically impossible’

Another said: ‘I have to say this challenge seems WAY harder than the other two’

A third added: ‘Bit behind on I’m A Celeb but think Helen, Phil and Fatima’s challenge was definitely the hardest!’

Another commented: ‘Well done Helen. Great effort, top work, Tuffers and Fatima supporting there. Tough trial that.

Someone penned: ‘I’m A Celeb in particular well done to Helen Flanagan… she did really well even if she failed she gave it a good go!’

Helen claimed she won’t chicken out of Bushtucker Trials in I’m A Celebrity South Africa after her 2012 stint in the jungle.

The actress was known for opting out of challenges when she first appeared on the ITV series.

Ahead of her return, she said: ‘The public know me best for being an absolute wimp in the trials. I was useless – really rubbish – but hopefully I’m going to be a lot better this time.’

She added: ‘Looking back now I can see how I was a bit of a drama queen back in 2012.

Gillian McKeith made a surprise entry to the camp in the final moments of Monday’s episode leaving fellow campmate Shaun Ryder fuming.

The arrival of the TV personality – who competed on series 10 of the original I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2010 with Shaun – in camp for the all-stars spin-off show did not go down well, with Shaun telling the other stars of their first run together: ‘I almost killed her!’

In the last few minutes of the first episode of this new series, Geordie duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly entered the camp to announce they had a surprise for the resident celebrities.

Television nutritionist Gillian, 63, was then seen emerging from a container after being brought in by several men carrying the box.

In a preview for Tuesday’s instalment, Happy Mondays’ singer Shaun, who was known for his arguments with Gillian during his original run appeared to seethe as he recalled his time with her.

‘Gillian arrived in a box, she should have stayed in the box,’ he exclaimed.

The duo’s blazing rows in 2010 saw Shaun brand the Scot ‘f****** irritating’ before telling hosts Ant and Dec: ‘If Gillian was my wife, she would be in pieces in a plastic bag, deep in a hole in the back garden.’

Meanwhile viewers already predicted Shaun would  be crowned King of The Jungle after the first episode.

The Happy Monday’s singer, 60, was branded a ‘legend’ as he returned for a second stint on the show following his previous appearance in 2010.

The nervous threesome learned that would individually face a staggering 50m drop over the edge of an imposing mountain.

Once they’d plummeted off the edge, they had to locate and remember a numbered code until they are hoisted back up to the top.

Former Countdown maths whizz Carol, who first appeared on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2016, bravely opted to go first, whopping as she jumped off the edge and flew down in front of the sheer rock face.

KISS Breakfast host Jordan, who also took part on the show for the first time in 2016, was next to leap off the platform, appearing to casually walk off before descending.

Sportsman Amir, who appeared on I’m A Celeb in 2017, appeared tense but successfully threw himself over the edge, before returning to the top.

All three stars remembered their codes and won their stars, meaning they all gained food for the camp.

Viewers took to Twitter to express their thoughts as they watched the dramatic scenes unfold.

One person joked: ‘Carol Vorderman definitely has bigger b**ls than Amir Khan #ImACeleb.’

Someone else posted: ‘#ImACeleb well done to Carol and Jordan. Jordan really went for it my god…’

Commenting on how Jordan appeared to calmly walk over the edge, someone else tweeted: ‘#ImACeleb Meanwhile Jordan walks off the platform like an absolute G #ImACeleb,’ while another person posted: ‘Jordan just walking off the thing #ImACeleb.’

Someone else remarked: ‘Amir Khan deserves his #ImACeleb fee. Unintentionally hilarious.’

While another viewer wrote: ‘Well done to Amir, I certainly didn’t expect him to do that ledge drop #ImACeleb.’

The show was pre-recorded in South Africa’s Kruger National Park last year, with the first episode airing on Monday.

For the first time in 21 years, the show, which kicks off on Monday and features an all-star cast, will not end with a Jungle King or Queen – instead having a ‘Legend’.

The lack of public vote means the stars, including Carol Vorderman , Helen Flanagan and Amir Khan, will compete against each other, thus will not be heading for royal status – instead just battling between each other.

I’m A Celebrity …. Get Me Out Of Here South Africa continues Tuesday 9pm on ITV and ITVX
