John Leguizamo jokes that if white actors can be cast in Latino roles he can play Gwyneth Paltrow in a TV show about her trial

John Leguizamo joked that if white actors can get cast in Latino roles, he can play Gwyneth Paltrow in a TV show about her trial.

Gwyneth is being sued by a retired optometrist who claims she crashed into him while skiing in a 2016 hit-and-run incident and left him with lasting brain damage.

Meanwhile John, 62, has been guest-hosting The Daily Show in the wake of Trevor Noah’s exit, and on Tuesday night’s episode he took aim at Gwyneth’s legal drama.

The Ice Age star has complained publicly in the past about Latino roles going to actors he believes are the wrong race to play them.

‘Well, guess what, if white people can take our roles, imma take theirs,’ he said to applause. ‘That’s right, when they do the TV series based on Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski accident trial, I’m gonna be Gwyneth Paltrow.’

Gwyneth’s legal woes have been unfolding in the headlines, with her claiming the optometrist caused the crash and countersuing for attorneys fees plus $1.

Memes have poured from the trial livestream, which included one viral clip of the plaintiff’s lawyer gushingly complimenting Gwyneth while questioning her.

On Tuesday’s Daily Show, after John said his punchline about playing Gwyneth, a picture appeared on screen of his face photoshopped onto her body at trial.

He put on a goofy voice to imitate Gwyneth and said: ‘He hit me so hard he knocked the egg right outta my vagina!’

The quip was a reference to Gwyneth’s lifestyle brand Goop, which sells a $66 dark nephrite jade egg for insertion in the buyer’s vagina.

According to the Goop website, the function of the egg is to ‘harness the power of energy work, crystal healing, and a Kegel-like physical practice.’

Last year John joined a social media furor over James Franco, who is a quarter Portuguese, being cast as Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in an upcoming picture.

Fidel himself was of Spanish extraction – his father moved to Cuba from Galicia and his mother had her roots in the Canary Islands.

‘How is this still going on?’ John erupted on Instagram. ‘How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well?’

He added: ‘No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement, which would be wrong! I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!’

In an ‘open letter to Hollywood’ published in the Los Angeles Times last November, John wrote that the City Of Angels ‘is approaching 50% Latino. But where are we onscreen? That is cultural apartheid.’

He declared: ‘There’s a fix for this: Cast more Latinos! We are nearly 20% of the population, so for every 10 characters, two should be Latino. For every 10 executives, two should be Latino. For every 10 crew members, two should be Latino. For every 10 films, two should be about Latinos.’
