He kept his arm wrapped around his girlfriend as the walked the red carpet, and at one time Kaia held him as well and gazed into his eyes seductively, as if they were going in for a kiss.

The couple initially sparked dating rumors in December of 2021, and they made the relationship official when they celebrated Valentine’s Day together in February 2022.

After being named on the TIME 100 list, Austin received glowing praise from Angela Bassett in a written tribute for the magazine.

She had previously been seen comforting the actor at the Oscars after he lost to The Whale’s Brendan Fraser.

During the piece, she spoke about her own Oscar snub.

The 64-year-old actress was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her powerful turn as Queen Ramonda in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, though she ultimately lost to Everything Everywhere All At Once star Jamie Lee Curtis.

She began by recalling that she first met the Elvis star ‘during a fleeting moment’ during a ‘very busy awards season.’

She added that the first encounter was, ‘one of many when we would share a hug and warm words,’ adding she was ‘fortunate’ to be considered a new friend of his.

‘On the evening of the Oscars, with Austin seated next to me, I understood intimately what he felt when it was time to learn if he would climb those stairs to the stage,’ she said.

Bassett’s nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was her second nomination, her first being for 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It, portraying the legendary Tina Turner.

While Bassett won a Golden Globe and an NAACP Image Award for her portrayal of the legendary singer, she ultimately lost the Oscar to Holly Hunter for The Piano.

‘So, I took his hand and held it softly as the winner was announced. Although his name wasn’t called, Austin is no less a winner,’ she added.

‘The time had come for Austin to say goodbye to Elvis as he began to embrace an infinite universe of possibilities as an actor. I can’t wait to see what he brings us next,’ she said.

Bassett added that she watched Butler’s performance in Elvis, ‘with a deep appreciation for all the work I knew Austin put into his performance.’

‘A lot goes into an actor’s finding their way into an icon, not pretending to be them but offering a perspective on the artist as we perform slices of their story. You walk away from that set forever changed,’ she added.

‘Your hope is that when people see the film, they don’t see you—they see an artist’s journey through a different lens. Austin accomplished this with a brilliantly nuanced performance,’ she said.

While it was a brief moment at the Oscars, many fans applauded Bassett for supporting Butler through his first Oscars, holding his hand while Brendan Fraser’s name was called instead of his.

‘Angela Bassett holding Austin Butler’s hand while he’s nervous… is exactly the kind of woman I imagined she was,’ said Twitter user @NadineBabu.

Another fan @kat_a_bru responded, ‘Aww the way she squeezed his hand in encouragement at the end.’

Another wrote, ‘It’s been a long road for her, too. And she sat there on the front row, was gracious, held Austin Butler’s hand while his category was up, and held herself like the regal queen she is.’

‘Screaming at Austin Butler clinging onto Angela Bassett,’ another wrote.

While many fans praised her for supporting Butler through his first Oscar loss, many others bashed Bassett for her reaction — or lack thereof — to her Oscar loss to Jamie Lee Curtis.

‘Everyone wants to win. However most won’t. That’s life. And sore loser is never a good look,’ one fan wrote.

Another quipped: ‘All you saying Angela Bassett should’ve won over Jamie lee… her reaction was poor sportsmanship.’

A third hilariously typed that Ariana DeBose’s panned BAFTAs rap — in which she said: ‘Angela Bassett did the thing’ — had cursed Bassett, stating, ‘She put a curse on Angela Bassett. Since then she lost every awards that she was up to.’
