Paul Burrell has opened up on his unlikely friendship with Helen Flanagan, whom he calls his ‘princess’.

The two formed a close bond as they joined a slew of other celebrities for the I’m A Celebrity spin-off show set in South Africa.

And while the former Royal butler, 64, was well known for being a close confidante of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, it seemed that Paul has welcomed a new ‘Princess’ into his life.

Speaking about his admiration for the ex Coronation Street actress, 32, Paul told The Mirror: ‘Helen was my princess, Helen is Princess Jasmine to me, even in my phone now she’s Princess Jasmine because she’s so lovely and sweet. And you wouldn’t think she had three children.

‘Every day she’d wear a different coloured bikini with lots of jewels stuck to it. And I said to her, “you know, you look like Princess Jasmine from Aladdin”.’

Paul also dished on his bond with Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, whom he entered the jungle with alongside Janice Dickenson.

He gushed how Shaun was ‘so funny and ‘so lovely’, with the singer remarking that the pair live on ‘a different planet’ to each other as they were so different.

He said of Shaun: ‘Shaun never told me whether he was a fan of the Royal family. He listened to all my stories like wow. And he said we’re going to keep in touch and we have exchanged messages since that but you’re right, the most unlikely pair of people. Me and Shaun Ryder, completely different spectrums.’

Meanwhile, Paul branded hosts Ant and Dec ‘spawns of the devil’ for laughing at his trial failures in the show, which was filmed in September but airs on screens next week.

During his original in 2004’s I’m A Celebrity, Paul left viewers in stitches thanks to his squeals and hilarious facial expressions as he faced his fears in a number of bushtucker trials.

And the former footman remarked that things are no much different this time around as he quipped ‘I’m still rubbish at trials’, before berating the hosts for ‘grinning’ at his ‘misfortune’.

Elsewhere in the chat, Paul told how he’s hit the gym before entering the jungle, embarking on a gruelling fitness routine with his personal trainer.

He told how the trainer did ‘a great job’, which viewers will see on the show, with Paul noting that his fitter frame even gave him the confidence to stand shirtless next to former boxer Amir Khan in the jungle.

It comes after Paul discussed his cancer battle and how he was supported by the late Royals during an appearance on Lorraine on Friday.

It was revealed earlier this year that his appearance on I’m A Celebrity South Africa, which starts on Monday, led to his diagnosis thanks to health tests prior to the show revealing that he had prostate cancer.

Paul, who worked beside and was a confidante of Diana, Princess of Wales, for ten years until her death in 1997, was diagnosed with the disease last summer.

During his appearance on Lorraine, he said: ‘I was sat in the jungle with cancer, the Queen had died. But I had two angels on my shoulder, the Queen and Princess Diana. I’m going to live my life and be grateful for everything’

Talking about the Queen, who passed away when they were filming, the former aide said: ‘She became my surrogate mother. Living with someone for 11 years, she made me the man I am today.’

Paul was offered a chance to go home after learning of the Queen’s passing, but he opted to stay in the jungle to ‘share his grief’ over the late monarch with his co-stars.
