Amy Schumer and Michael Douglas lead the celebrities wearing orange in recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day: ‘We’ve got a terrible situation out there’

Amy Schumer and Michael Douglas were among the celebrities wearing orange in honor of National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Wear Orange was established following the death of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl who was fatally shot at a playground in Chicago in 2013 – just one week after marching in President Obama’s inaugural parade.

‘Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Wear Orange is now observed every June,’ according to the Wear Orange website.

‘Wear Orange began on June 2, 2015—what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday. Since then, Wear Orange has expanded to a period of three days each year: National Gun Violence Awareness Day (the first Friday in June) and Wear Orange Weekend (the accompanying weekend).’

Schumer, 42, wore an orange shirt in honor of three victims of gun violence, including two who were killed at a showing of her 2015 film Trainwreck.

‘Wearing orange today in memory of Jillian Johnson, Mayci Breaux, and Ana Grace Marquez-Green,’ she posted to her Instagram Stories, along with a photo of her in the shirt.

Johnson and Mayci lost their lives in a shooting at the Lafeyette theater in Louisiana in 2015, while Marquez-Green was one of the children killed in Sandy Hook in 2012.

Michael Douglas also donned a ‘Wear Orange’ shirt and posted a video urging fans to sport the color.

‘Listen up! Today on June 2 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. I know, every single day should be Gun Violence Awareness Day. It’s June 2, so you make sure #WearOrange! We’ve got a terrible situation out there, it’s getting worse. June 2, National Gun Violence Awareness Day! This is presented to you by @Everytown for Gun Safety!’ he captioned the video.

Demi Moore shared an orange-tinted selfie as she recognized the day on social media: ‘On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, I #WearOrange to honor victims, survivors and anyone affected by gun violence.

‘Days like today help raise awareness for organizations like @everytown and @momsdemand, who are tirelessly fighting for better gun safety, but this fight is ongoing. Learn more about how you can take action at WearOrange.org.’

Julianne Moore also honored Hadiya as she took part in the day with a selfie.

‘Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. I wear orange for #hadiyapendleton who would’ve been 26 today, just 6 months older than my oldest child.
