‘They couldn’t hear me!’ Cannes staffer breaks silence on red carpet run-in with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

  • Vincent Chapalain has worked as a ‘red carpet manager’ at Cannes for 10 years
  • He says Hanks and Wilson were asking if they should go back to join the rest of the Asteroid City film crew when they were photographed
  • Because the cries of surrounding photographers were so loud, they yelled it

For a moment, he looked like red carpet roadkill.

But the Cannes staffer who was photographed under the pointed finger of Tom Hanks, one of the world’s biggest stars, and his wife Rita Wilson has come forward to insist it was all a misunderstanding.

Vincent Chapalain has worked for the Festival du Cannes for ten years as a ‘red carpet manager’ for ten years.

C’est une misunderstanding! Vincent Chapalain, the Cannes staffer who was photographed in a tense moment with Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, says the couple were merely asking if they should return to the start of the carpet

Chapalain, equally eager to dispel the fuss, has now corroborated Wilson's story on Twitter. 'They simply asked me if they should return to the start of the carpet with the rest of the film crew (I am not security.) And with the cries of photographers, they needed to speak loudly,' he said

On Tuesday, he was seen exchanging what looked like terse words with Hanks – whose hot temper has been well documented – and his wife.

Rita was quick to clear up the confusion and insist that they were in fact asking Chapalain whether or not to return to the beginning of the red carpet, where the rest of the crew from Hanks’ new film Asteroid City were.

The photos show Hanks and his wife gesturing behind them and holding hands to their ears.

While Monday night’s interaction wasn’t as tense as it first appeared, the Forrest Gump star has been known to have a short fuse in the past.
