Celebrity dentist bites back after losing high-profile media gig after 20 years: ‘No integrity’

A celebrity dentist has hit out at a Melbourne radio station after it cut ties with him and his practice after twenty years.

Dr Larry Benge, the founder of Next Smile Australia, is known as Melbourne’s dentist-to-the-stars and has worked with the likes of Eddie McGuire and the late Shane Warne.

He advertised his practice on 3AW for the last two decades and was also a regular contributor to its programs, where he would give his expertise on dentistry.

However, the station recently dropped him in favour of a new dentist and practice: Dr Reuben Sim of Dental Boutique.

Dr Benge has now publicly slammed 3AW, saying the station has ‘no integrity’ since it was bought out by the Nine Entertainment Co.

Dr Benge claims 3AW told him Dental Boutique wanted his practice’s advertisements off the air.

The radio station also allegedly said they would no longer work with Dr Benge’s practice unless he matched the $1.26million a year Dental Boutique was paying them for advertising.

This figure was four times greater than what Dr Benge was paying for his advertisements, reports The Herald Sun.

‘They said [to 3AW], “We want Larry Benge off,” so 3AW came to me and said, “Do you want to match it? $1.26m a year?”‘ Dr Benge told the newspaper.

‘I said, “Forget about it, I’m not interested. What about the fact you’ve got a loyalty for twenty years?” So much for being an unbiased station that can’t be bought.’

Dr Benge then got feisty, claiming he told Nine Radio’s managing director Tom Malone the decision ‘may come back to bite’ him.

In a statement to the Herald Sun, Mr Malone said he wished Dr Benge ‘all the best’.

‘We were sorry to end our association with Larry. He’s a great bloke. But at the end of the day it was a commercial decision and we have to act in the best interest of our business,’ he said.
