Bonnie Tyler has apologised to fans after she lipsynched Total Eclipse Of The Heart on Wednesday’s episode of This Morning.

The singer, 71, appeared on the show to discuss her new memoir and the 40th anniversary of her chart topping hit, telling presenters Craig Doyle and Josie Gibson, ‘I never get bored of singing it.’

Yet just moments later she closed the show by miming along to the track, with fans comparing her to a puppet and saying it looked like a foreign language dub.

A source told MailOnline that Bonnie was left ‘distraught’ after coming down with an illness that prevented her from singing.

Bonnie’s representative then confirmed that the singer was unwell and her only option was lipsynching even though she ‘hates’ miming.

A statement read: ‘Bonnie is incredibly disappointed that she had to lip synch on ITV’s This Morning. However, she woke up with a terribly bad sore throat, which was obvious from her speaking voice during the interview, and at rehearsals it was clear she couldn’t sing.

‘So rather than let TV and her fans down at the last moment she decided to mime instead. In fact, I have just spoken to her on the phone and it’s got a lot worse, she can hardly speak at all now.

‘Everyone should be assured that Bonnie’s voice is still very strong when she doesn’t have a cold, as anyone coming to any of her live shows this year will be able to hear for themselves.

‘She is very sorry if anyone felt let down by her having to mime, she actually hates miming and never usually does it, and is looking forward to her voice being back to it’s normal strength very soon.’

Bonnie was trending on Twitter on Wednesday as shocked viewers rushed to share their thoughts, joking: ‘Leave bonnie tyler alone she has been singing that song for 40 years straight and she couldnt be bothered to sing it today #ThisMorning [sic]’;

‘Ever wondered what it would look like to see a character from Thunderbirds sing Well thanks to #thismorning we got to see the fantastic total eclipse of the heart by Bonnie Tyler recreated by Gerry Anderson’s team of puppeteers.’

Others added: ‘At least put some effort into the miming ffs’; it’s like watching a foreign advert dubbed into English’; What was the point of having her on, may as well have just played the video! #thismorning’; What were you watching ???#mimingfail’;

‘I was hoping to hear her voice now. That’s a shame’; ‘Miming fail #thismorning #bonnietyler’; Cmon Bonnie love, us Welsh are supposed to be able to hold a tune , not MIME’; Wow what a let down with lip sync Bonnie Tyler #ThisMorning

‘If you’re going to mime at least practise a bit beforehand!!’; Bad miming as well on #ThisMorning’; @BonnieTOfficial. You have enough years to practice miming. You’d hope it would be slightly better. Was like you were singing a totally different song #ThisMorning #Bonnie #eclipse

‘Bonnie Tyler…This Morning…No No No!!! Shouldn’t have bothered…’; One of the best voices and she’s miming. That’s so disappointing. #ThisMorning.’

Earlier in her appearance, Bonnie spoke about receiving an MBE by Prince William for services to music.

She confessed: ‘I was nervous to meet William, even though I had met him a year before that. But I went in and he said to me “oh its lovely to see you again, I saw you in Cardiff”, and I thought “as if I’d forget” so I said yes, and I saw your children.’

Recognised for a career spanning five decades, Bonnie said at the tim: ‘I’m just a girl from a small town in Wales who just loves to sing.

‘So to be recognised for that in this way is very significant to me and my family and friends.’

Bonnie is no stranger to a TV blunder and in 2021 she baffled fans when she forgot the name of her album during an interview on Loose Women.

The Welsh singer struggled to remember the titles of her recent music releases as she shifted between different topics including the state of her hair and her brief encounter with the Pope.

Presenter Ruth Langsford said to the star: ‘We will talk to you about the album which is out now but are you always looking for that huge ballad?’

Bonnie responded: ‘Oh I have a wonderful songwriter at the moment called Steve Womack.

‘I actually have quite a few wonderful songwriters, Desmond Child as well, and they’ve written me fabulous songs on my new album which is called, erm…’ Bonnie stalled as she searched her brain for the name of her new album.

‘The Best Is Yet To Come,’ she said as the Loose Women panellists prompted the name in unison before bursting out in laughter.
