Russell Crowe broke down in tears on Friday morning as he spoke out about the tragic death of his puppy Louis.

The Gladiator star, 58, announced on Thursday his beloved pooch had died at just 16 months old after being hit by a truck on the two-year anniversary of his father’s death. 

Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, Crowe was emotional as he expressed his grief and heartache.

Host Kyle Sandilands began by offering Crowe his condolences, agreeing that dogs are ‘like family members’.

‘Are you alright? Is everything alright there?’ Kyle asked.

‘No, we’re actually a little devastated,’ Crowe replied with tears in his eyes.

‘He was such a beautiful little pup you know and kind of wrapped us around him and shaped our lives around him. So it’s gonna take a little time to get past.’

Sandilands and co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson again expressed their sympathy for the actor.

Crowe posted a photo of the his Papillon pup to Twitter on Thursday and captioned it with some heartbreaking words.

‘This is Louis. 16 months old. Tiny, cheeky, brave. He won my heart. Unfortunately today, on the 2nd anniversary of my fathers passing, he was hit by a truck,’ he wrote.

‘We tried to get him to the vet, but he died in my arms while I was telling him how much we loved him.’

Many of Russell’s celebrity pals were quick to offer their condolences to the heartbroken actor.

Tragically, the puppy died on the two-year anniversary of the death of Russell’s 85-year-old father, John Alexander Crowe. 

Prior to John’s death, the pair were isolating together at the family’s country estate in Nana Glen, New South Wales, with Russell revealing he wanted to be close to his parents John and Joceyln amid the pandemic. 

Russell documented his time in the outback with a sweet Instagram post of his ‘old man’ in April 2020.

He shared a snap of his dad beaming in front of the idyllic estate while clad in a baseball cap gifted from Russell.   

He captioned the shot: ‘Isolating with the old man. 84 now. Wearing a hat I got at Princeton while shooting A Beautiful Mind.’ 

Russell announced the sad news of his father’s death in a series of Twitter posts. 

He wrote: ‘I arrived back in the bush last night. Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has abated, this date will forever be tinged with sadness. 

‘My dear old man, my beautiful dad, the most gentle of men, has passed away. Passed away in Coffs Harbour, NSW, his home for the last 25 years. Rest In Peace.’
