Jay Blades reveals he discovered 27 siblings after finding fame

Jay Blades has revealed that his fame from TV show The Repair Shop has resulted in him discovering he has two more siblings taking the total to over 27 and counting – with others he’s yet to identify abroad.

Blades’s dad Trevor left his mother Barbara, taking all the family’s money, and Jay went on to refer to him just as ‘the man who contributed towards my birth’ because he won’t call him his father.

Now Jay has given his first detailed account of his relationship with his father, saying he saw him aged five, then not for 15 years, when Jay found out first he had four siblings and soon after 25 – only 11 of whom he’s ever met.

In total, Jay, 53, has spoken to the man only four times in his life, and he swore never to again after hanging up when his father rang seeking a favour and claimed the credit for turning Jay into a success.

But Jay ended up calling once more in recent years – the last time – after his appearances on TV led four new people to come out the woodwork claiming to be his siblings.

Jay said: ‘The man who contributed towards my birth got my mum pregnant when she was about 16, 17, promised her that he’s going to get a flat and they’re going to live happily ever after, took the money and left her high and dry. We ended up in a women’s refuge.

‘From there we went to live with her uncle and then we got a council house. So the man who contributed towards my birth came back into my life when I was about five I think.

‘I remember him and my mum arguing because he wanted to take me somewhere, and then he came back into my life when I was 20, 21.

‘I knew I had more brothers and sisters, and when I went to London with him and met the people he was living with, there were four there.

‘I said to him, “I know there’s more, I remember meeting a sister that was older than me, when you had me at five.” And he said, “No, no.” I said, “Are you sure?” “No, no, no, there’s no more.”

‘So I left that place, and the half-sister rang me and then she said to me, “Yeah, there is more, there’s loads more.”

‘I said, “Well how many more is there?” She’s like, “There’s 25.” I was like, “Wow.”

‘That’s just in this country. There’s some in Jamaica and some in America as well. I think he used to be a rabbit. I did challenge him after, and I’ve met 11 of them.’

Asked on The Big Fish podcast if he had siblings he’s not met, dad-of-three Blades said: ‘100%, loads. And since being on TV two more have come out the woodwork.

‘Well there was four that came out. A lot of them don’t want to be found and don’t want to be related to the man who’s contributed towards my birth because he’s put nothing into them. Some of them feel shame.

‘I have a real problem with him. I’ve probably spoken to him about four times in my entire life.

‘The last time he called me up and first of all he started talking to me about, “Oh, I’ve got a picture frame that I need repairing.”

‘And I was like, “There’s appropriate channels, go to the BBC website.” And he’s like, “You don’t know who this is, do you?”

‘I said, “I know who this is, this is the man that contributed towards my birth.” I said “What is it you’re after?”

‘He said, “I just want to tell you that everything you’re doing is because of me – I’m responsible for that.”

‘So I said to him, “I don’t know how you’ve worked that out, but one thing I must give you is this – you have taught me how not to be a father, and I can thank you for that. So if you have nothing further to say, I just want to bid you good day.”

‘I just put the phone down on him and that was it.’

Jay said he hoped and thought that would be the last time they’d ever speak, but his fame from hit BBC show The Repair Shop – which started in 2017 – led four people to claim they were siblings and so Jay rang his dad once more to find out.

Jay said: ‘I had to speak to him. About four people came out the woodwork since being on The Repair Shop and they said they’re my brother and my sister.

‘So I asked the other brothers and sisters that I know and they said, “We don’t know of those ones, you have to ask Trevor.” And that’s the man who contributed towards my birth. That’s his name.

‘I called him and said, “Listen, I don’t want to talk to you too long, just tell me, I’ve got these four names here, are these brothers and sisters of mine?”

‘He says, “Two of them are, the other two are not.” So I’ve got 27 now.

‘I’ve got a sister who is older than me, Samantha – really nice lady – and a sister who is either a month or two months younger than me.

‘His kind of motto was basically to go forth and multiply – to have children all over the place.

‘But when I look back in his history, he was kind of abandoned as a child, so his way was doing that.

‘There was some stuff I was doing as a teenager that was kind of mimicking him, with all these women, but I didn’t know this at the time.

‘Then you’re like, “Woah, I’m kind of doing what you are without even knowing you.” That’s a surreal experience.’
