Kyle Sandilands questions proposed casting for the Aussie remake of The Office after Magda Szubanski and Kitty Flanagan were put forward for the lead role: ‘They need actors no one has seen before’

Kyle Sandilands has questioned the casting of the lead role in the Australian remake of The Office, played by Ricky Gervais in the original and Steve Carell in the US version.

The reboot of the iconic BBC sitcom, a mockumentary sitcom set in a paper company led by a hapless boss, is set to be produced Down Under by Amazon Prime ‘in future months’.

Female stars including Magda Szubanski, Celia Pacquola, Kitty Flanagan, Judith Lucy and Felicity Ward have all been tipped as in the running for the lead role.

But Kyle Sandilands questioned the proposed casting on Tuesday morning’s Kyle and Jackie O Show.

‘That’ll be a disaster, I feel’ said Kyle. ‘Because they’ve cast all the wrong types of people.

He continued, ‘What they should have done, is used a cast of people that no one has ever seen before, like what happened with the original Office.’

‘I mean you can’t go past Ricky Gervais,’ agreed his co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson. ‘The British Office was the best one’

‘It’s going to be like a Kath & Kim spoof,’ Kyle predicted.

The program is being produced by Bunya Productions, producers of The Drover’s Wife, Jasper Jones and Mystery Road, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The original series consisted of two six episode seasons, plus two Christmas specials.

It featured Gervais as David Brent, an awkward office manager at a large paper company in Slough called Wernham Hogg.

The US remake was produced by NBC and saw Carell take on a version Gervais’ role, playing Michael Scott, regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch.
