Lisa Wilkinson ‘unlikely to return to TV screens until early 2024’ amid her continued involvement in Brittany Higgins saga

Lisa Wilkinson won’t be returning to TV screens this year, a new report has claimed.

After quitting Channel Ten’s The Project in November, the veteran television presenter is ‘unlikely’ to return to the airwaves ‘until early 2024’, but will still be paid a full-time salary.

Ten is waiting until her involvement with the Brittany Higgins/Bruce Lehrmann legal proceedings are over before putting her back on screens, according to The Australian.

Wilkinson’s name has recently emerged in the ongoing board of inquiry, led by former judge Walter Sofronoff KC, investigating the ACT criminal justice system.

This inquiry places special emphasis on the Lehrmann criminal trial, which was ultimately terminated last year.

One of the issues the board is looking at is Wilkinson’s speech at the Logies last year, during which she publicly praised Ms Higgins.

It was later claimed she was advised by ACT Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold not to deliver the speech, although Wilkinson has disputed this.

Earlier this year, an insider at The Project and a veteran TV commentator both said  Wilkinson will never return to the screens at Channel Ten and her television career, at least as a major star, is likely over.

Television and radio industry expert Peter Ford said Wilkinson was ‘Australia’s highest paid TV star at $44,000 a week and she’s not actually doing anything on camera’ and would likely never again appear on the Ten Network.

He told Daily Mail Australia the legal fallout from Wilkinson’s interview with Ms Higgins  was ‘a very toxic situation’ for the embattled network.

Wilkinson and Ten are being sued for defamation by Mr Lehrmann over her high-profile interview in which Ms Higgins told The Project star she was raped by ‘a male colleague’ in Parliament House in 2019.

Mr Lehrmann wasn’t named during the TV show nor was he publicly identified as Ms Higgins’ alleged rapist until August 2021, when he was formally charged with sexual assault.

He pleaded not guilty and continues to maintain his innocence.

The Project insider, who asked to remain nameless, said Wilkinson was likely ‘done for good’ at Ten and as far as her prospects were with other networks: ‘I don’t reckon anyone else will take her’.

Back in March in the Federal Court, Wilkinson named eight of her Ten colleagues involved in checking the validity of Ms Higgins’ allegations.
