Much-loved comedy is FINALLY returning to the BBC for its third series – after leaving fans in hysterics in lockdown
One of BBC’s most beloved lockdown comedies is finally returning to the channel later this month.
Staged, which stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen as exaggerated versions of themselves, released its third series on Britbox in November 2022.
Now, after calls from fans, the third run will finally hit BBC One and iPlayer from 14th June, with David’s wife Georgia sharing the air date on Instagram.
The BBC confirmed last month that they would finally release the series, after it had previously only been available on ITVX’s Premium platform.
Staged’s first series, released at the height of the Covid lockdown in 2020, focused on David and Michael attempting to rehearse Six Characters in Search of an Author.
It’s back! Staged is finally returning to the BBC later this month, with the third series set to air on the channel following its release on Britbox in November
The bickering duo, who previously worked together on 2019’s Good Omens played exaggerated versions of themselves, and frequently became embroiled in hilarious rows and disputes.
David’s wife Georgia, and Michael’s partner Anna Lundberg also starred in the series, which was almost entirely filmed over Zoom.
The second series, which was ironically released just as the UK was plunged into a third Covid lockdown in 2021.
It featured a slew of celebrity cameos including Whoopi Goldberg, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Simon Pegg, Michael Palin and Cate Blanchett.
Focusing on the ‘real’ Michael and David, the second series saw the pair pitching an American remake of Staged, only to be told they won’t be reprising their roles.
The third series sees much maligned director Simon Evans trying to get Michael and David to agree to a Christmas staged version of Six Characters in Search of an Author.
Eventually they begin working on a documentary of the show entitled Backstaged.

Following the third series’ original release in November, star Georgia told Radio Times.com that it wasn’t always in the pipeline to return for another run.
She said: ‘There was a lot of discussion about season 3 – much more so than there was about season 1 or 2.
‘Throughout the process, there were many times where I think every single one of us went, ‘Oh, this isn’t gonna happen.’ And we were sort of all fine with that.
‘The process of figuring out what that story was and how we were going to tell it – and whether we should tell it – took such a long time – we did go round the houses trying to come up with ideas and nothing felt like it clicked. We could have given up, but it felt like there was a story and we just needed to find it.
‘Then there was a moment where the idea came and it suddenly felt like, ”Oh, OK, well, now we’ve got the hook, we’ve got the premise.”
Staged’s third series premieres on Wednesday, June 14 at 10:40pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
