Netflix announces popular sitcom will come to an end after eighth and final series… as spin-off show is also axed

Netflix has announced that one of its most popular sitcoms will come to an end after its eighth and final series, while its spin-off show has also been axed.

The streaming platform confirmed Big Mouth will wrap up in 2024 after seven years, while its spin-off Human Resources will also end after its second series.

The seventh series of Big Mouth is slated for release on Netflix later this year and will be followed by another eighth season in 2024, before it will finish for good.

Meanwhile, the second series of Human Resources will come to screens later this month, with creators confirming that it will be the final instalment of the show.

The final chapter of Big Mouth will serve as a send-off for both animated shows as the characters from each will flow into new joint episodes, according to Deadline.

Big Mouth is inspired by best friends Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s childhood and follows a group of friends as they navigate puberty and adolescence.

Speaking of the news, producer Nick told the publication: ‘If you would have told adolescent Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg that middle school would take eight years to finish, they would have been like ‘yeah, that sounds about right, this seems like it will never end’.’

Netflix’s director of adult animation Billy Wee added: ‘Big Mouth is a towering achievement in animated comedy that will make Netflix history for its longevity.

‘We are thrilled that we still have two more hilarious seasons to share with fans before this brilliant coming-of-age story reaches its conclusion.’

Between them, Big Mouth and Human Resources have amassed more than 1billion hours viewed on Netflix to date.

Big Mouth is reportedly the longest-running scripted original series in Netflix history, outside of Kids and Family programming, surpassing Grace and Frankie.

Despite the show coming to an end, creators Nick and Andrew’s firm Brutus Pink has secured a huge deal with Netflix to keep creating animated content.

In July, it was reported that Brutus Pink signed a new three-year deal with Netflix, leaving them producing new animated projects for the platform until 2026.

Mark Levin, who helps to run the company, told Variety at the time: ‘Brutus Pink is thrilled to be continuing at Netflix, which has been our creative home for seven years.

‘We’re hopeful this means we get to keep the ‘Con Air’ DVD that’s been sitting on Nick’s coffee table in a red envelope since 2006.’
