Paul Cattermole previously admitted that he couldn’t even afford a new shirt for a TV appearance after being left bankrupt and living off noodles in the years after his S Club 7 fame.

The pop star died at the age of 46 at his home in Dorset on Thursday, it was announced today.

A statement released by his family read: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son and brother Paul Cattermole.

‘Paul was found yesterday, 6th April 2023 at his home in Dorset and was pronounced dead later that afternoon,’ while it was confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

In 2018, Paul – who was last pictured on Wednesday and was set to embark on a reunion tour with S Club 7 in October – left Loose Women viewers in tears as he discussed his life living on the breadline, revealing he was living off noodles and couldn’t afford a new shirt for his television appearance at the time.

The singer revealed he had fallen on hard times and had been experiencing money problems since being declared bankrupt in 2015.

Speaking with Christine Lampard, Saira Khan, Nadia Sawalha and Jane Moore, he said his financial woes had forced him to live off instant noodles and beg reality TV producers for work.

Admitting he was ‘nervous’ about appearing on the show as he was always used to being interviewed with the group, Paul recalled: ‘We toured the world, we are really good friends and was a lot of fun. I look back on those days very fondly. Possibly more fondly than ever before.

‘I wouldn’t say it was the perfect life, as its not very easy when you’re doing a pop group thing, the perception on the outside is not what its like on the inside. But there were very fun times. You take the rough with the smooth.’

S Club 7 – formed of Paul, Tina Barrett, Rachel Stevens, Jo O’Meara, Hannah Spearritt, Bradley McIntosh and Jon Lee – were one of the most iconic bands of their time, selling over 10 million albums worldwide, starring in their own TV series and winning two BRIT Awards.

Paul left the group in 2002, citing ‘creative differences’, and the group changed their name from S Club 7 to simply S Club before splitting for good a year later.

After his departure from the band, Paul mainly stayed out of the limelight but revealed he was desperate to appear on reality television.

He confessed that although he had approached producers of Dancing On Ice, Celebrity Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing, ‘for some reason they don’t want me’.

He added that he had been making ends meet by taking odd jobs and wouldn’t be adverse to doing something such as ‘delivering pizza’ for a living.

As he admitted that he had been reduced to living off instant noodles, Jane Moore revealed the show had to buy Paul his shirt to wear on the programme.

She said: ‘You literally didn’t have the money to buy the shirt on your back. How has it got that bad?’

Paul skirted around the issue as he explained: ‘Last year, there’s something that I can’t really discuss that happened so it’s a big tricky. But I’ve had an injury, so that’s what’s happened in the last year that’s made it very difficult.’

In October 2014, it was confirmed the original S Club 7 lineup would reunite for the first time in over a decade for BBC Children in Need, and later announced a UK reunion tour.

However, Paul admitted: ‘When we did the 2015 S Club tour I went bankrupt and I had to give all that money back.

‘So I had to give all my money for that tour to pay that bill off, so I had to do the next job that came in which was Rocky Horror. S Club might have done something else if I wasn’t pushed into that position.’

In a bid to ease his financial struggles, Paul tried to sell one of his BRIT Awards, and whilst there were reports the gong had been sold for £66,100 on eBay, he revealed that it didn’t end up selling.

He revealed: ‘It was no way a PR thing. I didn’t expect it to go how it did. I regret, in a way, how it has gone. I was hoping to be able to sell them quietly, without there being a furore.’

‘Can’t believe some including the #LooseWomen are being harsh on him. Obviously has issues that he can’t talk about publicly. Anyway thank you for the music back then Paul. Helped a young girl in a time of nee.’

Paul explained that he hasd’t given up, however, as he revealed that his mother had been a great support for him and admitted that he was on the hunt for love.

The singer – who famously dated bandmate Hannah Spearitt – confessed: ‘I would love to find a woman and we get married and have children.

‘That would be amazing. I’m a really nice boyfriend!’

Paul was found dead at his home in Dorset on Thursday and there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his passing.

The news is said to have come as a ‘shock’ to his fellow bandmembers, including his ex-girlfriend Hannah Spearritt who has been left ‘inconsolable’.

‘Paul’s family, friends and fellow members of S Club request privacy at this time.’

The band paid tribute to Paul on Twitter, writing: ‘We are truly devastated by the passing of our brother Paul.

‘There are no words to describe the deep sadness and loss we all feel. We were so lucky to have had him in our lives and are thankful for the amazing memories we have.

‘He will be so deeply missed by each and every one of us. We ask that you respect the privacy of his family and of the band at this time.’
