Russell Crowe reveals the bizarre incident that happened when filming his new supernatural horror film The Pope’s Exorcist

Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe has revealed a creepy incident that occurred while he was filming his new horror film about demonic possession.

The 59-year-old Oscar winner said that after completing filming on The Pope’s Exorcist one day, he found a dead bird on his door step.

Russell portrays Father Gabrielle Amorth in the supernatural thriller, a real-life figure who was based at the Vatican and is said to have performed 60,000 exorcisms.

Still, the Gladiator star was quick to dismiss the suggestion that the spooky incident was the work of some other-worldly evil force.

Telling the story on the U.K. social media site Joe, Russell, who lives on a farm in northern NSW, said that he thought that a wild animal was responsible for the grisly find.

The incident occurred while Russell was filming the Pope’s Exorcist in Ireland.

‘Being an old bushy, I just sort of put two and two together and realised that there must be some creature around there who had noticed that we weren’t there and had proffered the dead bird as a welcome home gift,’ Russell explained.

The star then appeared to allude to the countless stories about haunted sets and supernatural happenings that reportedly occurred during the making of such Hollywood ‘Demon’ classics as The Exorcist (1973) and The Omen (1976).

‘I think with a lot of these things, it really depends on what you’re prepared to take in and whether or not you can remain objective,’ he said.

‘[You]…see these things and understand these things and still stop yourself from sliding into the rabbit hole with that thought process.’

Russell plays Fr Amorth, who died in 2016 at the age of 91, and wrote two books detailing horrifying tales of demonic possession – An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.

His death prompted national mourning in Italy, where an estimated 500,000 people visit an exorcist each year.

Although the Catholic Church officially recognises exorcism, its modernisers see it as a medieval hangover that plays on superstition to strengthen religious devotion.
