Toni Collette says she was NOT ‘fussed’ about turning 50 last year

Toni Collette is a prolific actress who has been working steadily since her debut in 1994’s Muriel’s Wedding.

The Sixth Sense actress turned 50 in November – a milestone that leaves many people feeling out of sorts – but not her.

‘I wasn’t fussed about the number itself,’ she told People. ‘I know a lot of people are, but I think accumulatively, over time, I’ve gotten to know myself, accept myself, love myself and all these things really enrich your life.’

The Power star – who announced she was getting divorced in December – shared that she feels that’s the real secret being totally okay with aging.

‘The more you nurture your internal world, the richer your experience is of engaging with the external world. So it just makes everything deeper and more beautiful.’

‘Life is so magical and magnificent and I’m in a position where I’m really able to see that clearly. I’m just so grateful for all of the experiences I’ve had,’ the Australian actress added.

Collette hasn’t been hampered in her career by her age – she’s currently starring in the Amazon Prime series Power and shooting Mafia Mamma.

Power is a sci-fi drama of the novel about a group of teenage girls mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to produce electricity from their fingertips which leads to them overthrowing the patriarchy.

‘It’s such a big, beautiful fantastical idea,’ the Little Miss Sunshine star said. The series also stars Auli’i Cravalho and John Leguizamo.

‘That moment where Auli’i says she can wear both of her airpods while jogging because she knows she can protect herself … it makes me tear up. It’s so incredibly moving. We all deserve that kind of freedom,’ she said of women no longer having to be afraid of going about their days and lives.

And she loved shooting the comedy Mamma Mia about a woman with an average, boring life who inadvertently becomes the head of a crime family.

‘It was such a joy,’ she said about shooting in Rome last summer. ‘Italy has always been one of my favorite countries. I think I’m meant to be there. I must have a had a past life there. Life just makes sense for me there.’

And if it feels like Collette is everywhere lately – there’s a reason for that. In just the last year she’s starred in Netflix’s Pieces of Her, HBO’s The Staircase, and the black comedy The Estate.

About a month after she turned 50, Collette announced she was divorcing her husband of 20 years, the musician Dave Galafassi, 45.

The couple, who are parents to daughter Sage, 15, and son Arlo, 12, married in 2003.

She announced the split on her newly re-activated Instagram accounts after photos surfaced of Galafassi frolicking in the surf with chiropractor Shannon Egan.

‘It is with grace and gratitude that we announce we are divorcing,’ she wrote in the joint statement. ‘We’re united in our decision and part with continuing respect and care for each other.

‘Our kids are of paramount importance to us and we will continue to thrive as a family, albeit a different shape. We’re thankful for the space and love you grant us as we evolve and move through this transition peacefully. Big thanks.’

Hours before her divorce announcement Collette posted a cryptic note to Instagram stating: ‘No matter what your current circumstances are, if you can imagine something better for yourself, you can create it.’

She reactivated her account five days before the divorce announcement, sharing a photo of herself drinking from a ‘Happy Birthday’ cup with the caption: ‘I’m back. Hello world. I love you.’

Collette and Galafassi have divided their time between Australia and the United States in recent years.

The pair met in 2002 at the launch of Galafassi’s band Gelbison’s debut album Metal Detector in Sydney and their second encounter came just a few days later at a house party.
