Where is the cast of Indecent Proposal 30 years after the film’s release?

Indecent Proposal may have came out 30 years ago but it introduced a premise that people still debate to this day – can you put a price tag on your marriage?

In the film, David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) are a happily married couple that find themselves in a financial crisis. They decide to take a trip to Las Vegas to win big at the casino.

When they end up losing everything they have, billionaire John (Robert Redford) approaches them with an unusual offer.

He promises to give them $1 million if he can sleep with Diana.

The movie – and its controversial premise – divided critics and audiences upon its release, with some praising the sordid nature of the storyline, while others slammed it for its ‘sexist’ portrayal of women.

Rolling Stone described the movie as ‘sexist propaganda’, branding it a ‘bonbon spiked with malice’, while the New York Times branded it ‘far-fetched’.

Feminist author Betty Friedan blasted the plot of the movie, insisting that it was going to teach 13-year-old girls that they ‘don’t need to bother’ with their homework and instead simply ‘diet enough to be anorexic, get some silicone and look for that lonely billionaire’, according to the LA Times.

Three decades later, the movie continues to be the subject of much debate among film fans, and as a result has become something of a cult classic, while many of its stars have gone on to achieve huge Hollywood stardom.

Now that 30 years have come and gone since the film’s release, the cast of the film are all in different stages of their life.

Some of the actors like Robert Redford have retired from acting. Others went through hardships like Demi Moore’s real life ex-husband Bruce Willis who is currently battling frontotemporal dementia.

Here’s what each of the cast members have gotten up to since Indecent Proposal hit theaters on April 7, 1993.

Robert Redford spent 60 years acting before announcing his retirement in 2018

Robert Redford has had a lengthy career and Indecent Proposal was smack dab in the middle of it. While he has announced his retirement from acting in 2018, he is still involved with Hollywood as a producer.

Redford, 86, played John, the billionaire who offers the Murphys the unique offer of $1 million to sleep with Diana.

The actor seemed to enjoy his time on set calling it a ‘joyride’ and claimed he had a ‘wonderful part,’ which allowed him to work on his own film at the same time.

‘That was a bit of a joyride. I thought it was definitely a wonderful part,’ he told Interview Magazine in 1994.

‘And since it didn’t require that much time, as you can tell, it enabled me to edit a River Runs Through It simultaneously.

‘But I was very intrigued by working with a director [Adrian Lyne] with such a strong visual sense. Curiously, directing my own films have made me more tolerant and patient.

‘I’ve always been an extremely impatient actor—you know, not too many takes, don’t want to spend too much time on the set. Waiting around drove me nuts. But now I’m much more sympathetic to a director’s struggle.’

The 90s continued to be a prosperous time for Redford as he produced the films Quiz Show (1994), She’s The One (1996), and No Looking Back (1998).

During this time, Redford met his second wife, Sibylle Szaggers, who is a multimedia environmental artist and is the artistic director at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

The actor was first married in 1985 to Lola Van Wagenen. They ended up having five children together, two of which died of sudden infant death syndrome. Their other three children- Sauna, James and Amy – survived into adulthood.

Eventually, he and Lola divorced after 27 years of marriage.

In 2004, he revealed to The Guardian that he may not have gotten married for the right reasons, explaining that he was trying to ‘save his life’ from becoming directionless.

‘I got married very young, at 21,’ he explained.

‘Obviously I don’t want to denigrate the person I married, there were a lot of good reasons.

‘But when you ask me a question “like why?” I have to say it was to save my life. That’s what it felt like at the time.’

Fast forward to March 2009, Redford proposed to his girlfriend, Sibylle, and prepared to enter his second marriage.

At the time, the Oscar-winning actor told German magazine Bunte: ‘We are engaged and very happy with that. She (Sibylle) is my fiancée and that says everything, doesn’t it?’

They tied the knot in a ceremony in Hamburg, Germany later that year.

He continued to produce films throughout the 2000s, including Lions For Lambs (2007) which he also starred in.

His acting career picked back up again in the 2010s as he was featured in All Is Lost (2013) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) as Alexander Pierce.

However, by 2018, he revealed that he planned on retiring from acting. As his film The Old Man & The Gun was about to release, he started dropping hints that he was ready to leave the industry.

‘I don’t know if [Old Man and the Gun] is the last one,’ he told Variety.

Then added: ‘I can’t last forever.’

In late August, Robert told the crowd at Telluride Film Festival ahead of the premiere of the new film: ‘The truth is that I really do feel that it’s time for me to move into retirement.

‘I’ve been doing this since I was 21. I’ve put my soul and heart into it over the years.

‘I thought, “That’s enough. Why don’t you quit while you’re a little bit ahead? Don’t wait for the bell to toll. Just get out.”

‘So I felt my time had come and I couldn’t think of a better project to go out on than this film.’

He then reflected on his statement, telling EW: ‘Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21.

‘I thought, “Well, that’s enough.” And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?’

He also stepped away from Sundance. He had a major role in the Sundance Film Festival considering he purchased the land it was held on.

Each year, he would come out and speak. However, in 2019, he announced it would be the last time.

‘Having done this for God, 34 years now, since the festival started,’ Redford said.

‘I think we are at a point where I can move on to a different place.

‘I’ve been spending a lot of time introducing things but I don’t think that the festival needs a lot of introduction any more.’

He has mostly stuck to this pact – aside from his cameo in Avengers Endgame.

However, he is still working as a producer. His most recent credit is Disbeliever (2022).

Professional life aside, he is still happily married to Sibylle.

However, he experienced a devastating loss in 2020 after his son, James, from his marriage with Lola passed away from bile-duct cancer.

Demi Moore strived as a leading lady in Hollywood – and is now supporting ex-husband Bruce Willis through his bitter health battle

Demi Moore has had a plentiful career since Indecent Proposal, but had to step back from the industry after her ex-husband, Bruce Willis, was diagnosed with aphasia.

Moore starred in the 1993 film as Diana, the woman forced to choose if she should sleep with billionaire John to earn their family $1 million.

‘I never felt it was derogatory,’ she told Vanity Fair of the film’s premise in 1993.

‘It was much more about a decision a couple made, not about somebody who got put up for something or lost in a poker game, like Honeymoon In Vegas.’

‘Her body, to me, was the least important sacrifice she made, compared to the potential loss of her marriage, which was something she valued more than anything.’

Moore didn’t seem to have as positive of an experience as her co-star Redford.

She butted heads with director Lyne over a number of issues including sex scenes and weight.

Lyne had felt that Moore had lost too much weight in between the time she was cast and the fitting, but Moore didn’t want to gain the weight back.

She wrote about the incident in her memoir Inside Out, saying that he told her she ‘lost a lot of weight’ and became ‘disturbed’ and yelled: ‘I don’t want you looking like a f***ing man!’

‘I didn’t feel like I could stop exercising,’ she wrote.

‘It was my job to fit into that unforgiving military uniform I’d be wearing in two months in [1992’s] A Few Good Men.

‘Getting in shape for that movie launched the obsession with working out that would consume me over the next five years. I never dared let up.’

She also shared that he would yell emphatically and cheer during their sex scenes, which she initially found ‘creepy.’

‘[Director Adrian] Lyne would cry things like “F***ing raunchy!” and “Oh god, got a boner on that!” Here was this guy getting all sweaty and worked up, yelling about boners,’ she wrote.

She added: ‘At first it was creepy … but once I got used to it, I saw its advantages: having Adrian carry on that way took the focus off my awkwardness because he was so over-the-top.’

Eventually, they reached a compromise on how the sex scenes would appear in the film.

Moore and Lyne agreed that ‘he would be free to shoot the sex scenes however he wanted, but in the end I could review the footage and if there was anything I felt was too invasive or gratuitous, he would cut it.’

While filming Indecent Proposal, Moore was married to Willis, which was her second marriage.

Her first was at the very young age of 18 to Freddy Moore. In her memoir, she described how she aggressively pursued Freddy.

She also confessed for the first time that she had cheated on him during her bachelorette party.

‘The night before we got married, instead of working on my vows, I was calling a guy I’d met on a movie set,’ she wrote.

‘I snuck out of my own bachelorette party and went to his apartment.

‘Why didn’t I go and see the man I was committing to spend the rest of my life with to express my doubts?

‘Because I couldn’t face the fact that I was getting married to distract myself from grieving the death of my father.

‘Because I felt like there was no room to question what I’d already put in motion.’

Once the memoir came out, the man came forward as Paul Carafotes.

‘I told her I was tired and going to bed, but she was persistent,’ he told RadarOnline.com.

‘I told her if she wanted to come over, I’d leave my kitchen window open, but she’d have to climb the fire escape.

‘Next thing I know, I’m being woken up — Demi is standing over me with a bottle of Dom Pérignon saying, “Let’s party!” She was wild. We were all that time.’

It was safe to say that marriage didn’t last long. She and Freddy got divorced after four years of marriage when Moore found herself shacking up with a cameraman while filming Blame It On Rio and developing a cocaine addiction.

Moore seemed much more ready to settle down by the time she married Willis. They welcomed their daughter, Rumer, a year later in 1988.

Even though the two hit a snag when he had told her he didn’t want to be married anymore, she had gotten pregnant with their second daughter, Scout, in 1991.

Three years later came their third daughter, Tallulah. They stuck it out for a few more years before announcing their separation in 1998 and divorcing in 2000.

During that time, Moore still worked. In fact, she starred in some of her most notable films like Disclosure (1994) and G.I. Jane (1997).

Not long after, she started dating Ashton Kutcher. The couple, who had a 15-year age gap, started dating in 2003, the year her film Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle was released.

They tied the knot two years later in 2005. As she worked on films like Mr. Brooks (2007) and Margin Call (2011), she also wanted to expand her family.

However, she revealed in her memoir that it wasn’t something he was interested in despite expressing otherwise.

She explained: ‘He was focused on other things: his work; his growing involvement in the tech world; his fantasy football league.’

When Moore wanted to get pregnant with him again after previously miscarrying, he agreed to use an egg donor, only to back out of it four days later. According to her, he replied: ‘I never thought you’d go through with it.’

She also accused him of pressuring her into threesomes and eventually cheating on her, which led to their divorce in 2011.

She said that she did the threesomes to ‘fit the mold of the woman he wanted his wife to be’ but they ultimately left her feeling full of ‘shame.’

‘I put him first,’ Moore said in the book.

‘So when he expressed his fantasy of bringing a third person into our bed, I didn’t say no. I wanted to show him how great and fun I could be.

‘They were good people, but it was still a mistake. I was strangely flooded with shame, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this whole thing was somehow my fault.’

When the memoir came out, Kutcher told Esquire he was ‘f**king pissed’ that she wrote about their marriage and divorce – which made him ‘feel like a failure’ – because of the attention it put on him.

‘I’d finally gotten to a place where the press had really laid off me and Mila, and my life and my family. And then the next day, [the paparazzi] are at my kids’ school,’ he told the outlet.

Ultimately, he didn’t want to drudge up any drama or bad feelings, so he concluded his account by stating: ‘I don’t want to open anything up in that realm.’

Moore continued to act in films like Blind (2016) and Corporate Animals (2019).

However, her main focus has recently become her ex-husband, Willis, who was diagnosed with aphasia.

Prior to his diagnosis, the two seemed to be back on good terms.

In 2020, Willis and Moore made headlines after they spent four weeks in quarantine with their daughters, two of their daughters’ boyfriends, and her assistant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘We’ve become like a tribe,’ Willis told W Magazine at the time.

‘It’s generated a lot of interest because everyone can understand resentment and envy in the breakup of a marriage, but they don’t understand how I can get along with my ex like that.

‘Demi and I made a choice to put the kids first, and we’re really lucky that it turns out we all have fun together.’

In March 2022, the family announced the actor had aphasia in a joint statement signed by Moore and their children as well as his current wife, Emma, and her children with Willis: Mabel and Evelyn.

Almost a year later, Emma and Moore released a joint statement revealing a more specific diagnosis. They revealed his dementia diagnosis while referring to their joint unit as ‘our family’ and him as ‘our beloved husband.’

That March, Emma, Moore and their families came together to celebrate Willis’s birthday.

‘Happy birthday, BW! So glad we could celebrate you today,’ Moore wrote in the caption with an Instagram photo of the entire family gathered in celebration.

‘Love you and love our family,’ she continued.

‘Thank you to everyone for the love and warm wishes – we all feel them.’

Woody Harrelson put his Playboy days behind him and settled down with his assistant, Laura Louie

Woody Harrelson, 61, was a controversial figure before Indecent Proposal, but he has copped criticism over the years in relation to his comments about filming sex scenes and anti-vax rhetoric.

Harrelson played David Murphy, the man who finds his marriage at risk when his wife, Diana, contemplates sleeping with John for $1 million.

However, he also weighed in on a debate that has followed the film and its director, Adrian Lyne, since its release.

Lyne is notorious for including sex scenes in his films.

Harrelson is seemingly not only a fan, but weighed in on how he prefers to film them ‘without boundaries’ and expressed concerns for what his scene partner, Moore’s husband, thought.

‘I’m close friends with Demi and with Demi’s husband [Bruce Willis]. You have to draw the line at how far to go, and I’m not good at drawing lines,’ he told The Baltimore Sun in 1993.

‘I like to be lineless, without boundaries. The scene was flesh and flesh coming together.

‘I don’t know if Demi was turned on, but me… But you have to think of what the repercussions will be. I don’t want Bruce coming after me.’

But it wasn’t just his comments making headlines, it was his personal life too.

According to The Times, Harrelson ‘had as much sex’ as he could, and would brag about sleeping with three women a day during the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Before meeting Louie, he had expressed that he ‘never believed’ in marriage. He was only married once before to Nancy Simon in 1985 – seemingly as a joke.

‘I never believed in the concept of [marriage]. I just never believed that it made any sense, this long-term monogamy thing that humans do,’ he told THR in 2017.

‘Relationships do tend to get very proprietary. And so you end up, before you realize it, in a cage – maybe a very comfortable cage, but still a cage – and you can’t be the person you want.

‘Obviously, you can’t have sex with anyone else, but many times you can’t even be the person that you were before.

‘I just was incapable of long-term relationships. I was with whoever would have me. Then I met my wife.’

They met when Louie, a San Francisco native and UCLA student, was visiting the set as part of a workshop set up by her school in 1987.

‘At some point, I was like, “Hey, does anybody here have secretarial skills? ‘Cause I could really use an assistant,”‘ the actor recalled of their initial meeting.

‘And this young woman, Laura Louie, raised her hand. I asked her to come down ’cause she was up in the stands.

‘So she came down, and I said, “We’ll meet tomorrow. Come out to my place.”‘

Louie did just that and the two hit it off immediately.

He continued: ‘We had one of the greatest conversations I ever had, so she became my assistant.’

He said he was on a solo trip in Africa when he suddenly realized he was in love with her.

‘I just started thinking about Laura, fantasizing about her. I mean, talk about forbidden fruit,’ he said.

‘It was, “Do not have these thoughts!” But I’d have the thoughts, and they would tantalize me in such a way.

‘I remember it was as if my teeth were itching, like an unscratchable itch inside the teeth. That’s how much it was suffusing my being.

‘It was one of those things I wouldn’t admit to myself: I didn’t want to be attracted to my amazing assistant.

‘So I come back to LA I ask all of my friends, “Do you think I should follow through on what I’m feeling?”

‘And 100 per cent of them said, “No!” because they knew my track record – I mostly just had one-night stands.’

Despite his friends – and his own conscience – telling him not to pursue her, Harrelson decided to profess his feelings for Louie by writing her a romantic love song in 1989.

‘It was pretty direct. I play her the song, and afterward she says, “Woody, I’ve been in love with you for the last two and a half years.”‘

The couple made their first red carpet appearance in 1995, around the same time he worked on the films Natural Born Killers (1994) and The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996).

In spite of his love for her, their relationship hit a snag in 2002 when he admitted to cheating on her with two women that he met in a London bar.

‘I was kind of hoping she wouldn’t see [the article]. I can’t remember the details – I’ve doubtless repressed it. She never saw the thing. But someone told her,’ he explained.

‘Laura – this really gives you a sense of the depth of her compassion – what she said to me after finding out was, “That must be really hard for you, to have this s*** exposed.” She just said that.

‘Now that doesn’t mean she wasn’t upset. How did I apologize? You know, just your standard Texan grovel. But she forgave me and we’re still together.’

He and Louie got married in 2008 after nearly two decades together in an affordable $500 wedding in Hawaii.

While Harrelson told The Hollywood Reporter that ‘marriage certainly softened’ him, he admitted that he doesn’t think ‘anything will ever calm him down.’

‘I got the most amazing wife I could imagine. But did marriage calm me down? I don’t think anything will ever calm me down,’ he said in 2017.

‘I frequently think of my situation. Just having this family who has been so loving and so kind to me – like, more than I deserve, maybe.

‘And in some ways I think that has mellowed me. Maybe “mellowed” isn’t the right word, but it has softened those areas that were too hard.

‘I guess there has been a change in me. If I’m honest, I have to say that something has shifted, some kind of basic core disturbance.’

After tying the knot with Louie, he worked on a number of films including Zombieland (2009), The Hunger Games (2012), True Detective (2014) and most recently, Triangle Of Sadness (2022).

Harrelson stirred up more controversy while hosting Saturday Night Live.

During his opening monologue, he discussed reading ‘the craziest script’ for a movie pitch, which he later made clear was in reference to the COVID-19 vaccine regulations.

‘So the movie goes like this,’ he said.

‘The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes.

‘And people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.’

‘I threw the script away,’ he went on to joke.

‘I mean, who was going to believe that crazy idea? Being forced to do drugs? I do that voluntarily all day.’

Platt played Jeremy, the lawyer who helped make the contract for John and the Murphys’ unusual deal.

The same year, he played his most iconic role as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (1993).

He landed some of his other bigger roles at the end of that decade, starring in Lake Placid (1999) and Bicentenial Man (1999).

But in 2000, Platt hit a career pothole with the TV drama Deadline, one of the few programs produced by Dick Wolf (Law & Order) to tank.

Fortunately, it didn’t take too long for his career to pick up at all as he landed a recurring role on the coveted series The West Wing.

He took pride in his character, Oliver Babish, who wasn’t afraid to challenge the most intimidating figures – even the president.

‘Here was this guy [Babish] who recognized how much trouble [the president] was potentially in and was completely direct with him,’ Platt told NPR.

‘The character… cut across the current of the rest of the personalities of that show. And so all I really needed to do was to get on the horse and ride.’

He also explained the rigorous attention to detail that writer Aaron Sorkin enforced on his script and the actors’ line deliveries.

‘There’s this nice little lady who sits behind the camera… and she would tell you afterward if you literally got an “a” or a “the” or a “but” wrong – and you’d have to do it all over again,’ he shared.

He added: ‘And that Oliver Babish, he was a talky fellow – there were some lengthy speeches.’

Soon after he landed a series regular role on the series Huff as Russell Tupper.

‘I have to make him relatable,’ the actor, who has been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for this performance, told Backstage of his character.

‘Russell is writ larger than everyone else, but we all have issues with avoidance. It’s not a human instinct to confront the pain of life.

‘And this guy avoids it gleefully. He is desperate to convince everyone that he’s having such a great time. But he’s such a sad character.’

The series ran form 2004 to 2006. He continued to book TV roles like Paul Jimson in The Big C (2010) while returning to the big screen in films like 2012 (2009) and Ginger & Rosa (2012).

While reflecting on how he chooses roles with Backstage, he told the site that he always wants to do something ‘different from what I just did.’

‘I know the next job when I see it. I don’t have boxes that I check off. I do have to be interested in the role,’ he explained.

‘If I’m bored with a role, the audience will be bored. I’ve been lucky: I’ve always been fortunate in finding something about each of the jobs that has appealed to me,’ he continued.

Eventually, he settled down and found a home with the extremely successful Chicago franchise. His character, Daniel Charles, is primarily affiliated with Chicago Med, which has run from 2015 to 2013.

He has also appeared on Chicago P.D. in 2015. He then popped up in Chicago Fire that year and Chicago Justice in 2017.

He told Parade Magazine that he thoroughly enjoys ‘telling stories about first responders’ and weighed in on how speaking to real-life employees helped inform his character.

He told the outlet: ‘When I was researching the role, I suppose I just hung out with a lot of psychiatrists and when I asked, “What do you think is the most important thing in terms of the transactional relationship between a mental health worker and their patient? What is the thing that is the most important to making it work?” They actually all said compassion.’

Seymour Cassel was another character actor who has starred in an array of films both before and after Indecent Proposal.

In the film, Cassel played John’s chauffeur Mr. Shackleford.

Even though he had an accomplished career before Indecent Proposal, tracing back to 1958, he took a step back from Hollywood in the mid to late 80s.

Several factors were to blame including his divorce from his wife of 19 years, Elizabeth Deering. They had two children, Dilyn and Matthew, but it wasn’t enough to hold their marriage together.

He also admitted that he had gotten hooked on alcohol.

‘I was crazy. I mean, people would have one foot in Dan Tana’s in LA and one foot inside the door and one out,’ he told NPR.

‘When I would get a little drunk, I would just be funny and stupid.’

However, he was inspired to quit drinking and return to Hollywood after the death of one of his close friends and co-collaborators – director John Cassavetes – who helped launched his career in the first place.

‘I mean, it was the older brother I never had, and it was the closest male friend that I ever had,’ he told the outlet.

‘And he was extremely influential in how – in creating my career and guiding it – and by loving me as much as he does or did.’

He made his comeback starring in a series of indie films – which includes his biggest role to date,Bert Fischer – in the 1998 Wes Anderson film Rushmore.

He starred in Anderson’s next films, The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004).

He strayed into the mainstream with Indecent Proposal, as well as Stuck On You (2003) and Lonesome Jim (2005). However, he has always expressed his preference for the indie outlet.

‘Independent film is film that has thought in it. There’s no independent thought in studio films. It’s collective thought,’ he told IndieWire.

He continued: ‘With independent film, simply because they don’t have the money to make a big budget film, they’re forced to make a story that’s important to them, that they would like to see on film, a personal story that people can relate to, about people, where you can see the love of the characters.’

‘That’s true of the best films I’ve done, certainly Cassavetes’ films,’ he added, once again giving a nod to his late friend.

Sadly Cassel passed away in 2019 at age 84 from Alzheimer’s disease.

Billy Bob Thornton married his sixth wife (and fifth Angelina Jolie) since Indecent Proposal

Billy Bob Thornton may have only made a cameo in Indecent Proposal as the Day Tripper, but he went on to have a fruitful career immediately following the film.

In fact, he may have his Indecent Proposal co-star, Redford, to thank for his success.

Redford had read an article praising Thornton’s first screenplay, One False Move (1992), and gave him advice on how to proceed with his career.

Thornton claimed: ‘[Redford] said, “Here’s what you don’t do. Now that you’ve done this, don’t take the next big [film]. Do these kinds of movies and take supporting roles, and then do your own thing before you take a big movie.”

‘And he was right because a few years later we made Sling Blade,’ Thornton concluded.

He didn't make the film Sling Blade (1996) until he was 41 years old, but the actor claims he's glad he had his big break later in life

Sling Blade (1996) is still Thornton’s biggest film to date. Soon after, he filmed his next big hits A Simple Plan (1998), The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001) and Monster’s Ball (2001).

He didn’t make Sling Blade until he was 41 years old, but the actor claims he’s glad he had his big break later in life.

‘If I had made it as an an actor when I was in my 20s or younger, I may not even be here now,’ he told People.

‘I don’t think I was equipped in my early 20s to handle that, because I had a history in my late teens, early ’20s, of certain chemical refreshments and things like that.

‘I don’t know if I would’ve made it through. I’m happy that things unfolded in a way that I didn’t force, that they just happened. I still appreciate that.’

Meanwhile, love life was constantly buzzing. By the time the year 2000 rolled around, he was married to Angelina Jolie.

He was previously married to Melissa Lee Gatlin (1978-1980), Toni Lawrence (1986-1988), Cynda Williams (1990-1992) and Pietra Dawn Cherniak (1993-1997).

While his wedding with Jolie was his fifth, it certainly stood out.

Jolie and Thornton infamously wore vials of each other’s blood while they were married.

In a 2014 interview with THR, he explained that it was Jolie’s idea.

‘She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razor blade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets, and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair in one,’ he said.

However, he also claimed that the media made it out to be more than it was, stating: ‘From that we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks.’

Later on, he also tried to play down the blood necklaces while speaking with People.

‘The necklaces were a very simple thing, “Hey let’s poke our fingers with a pen and smear a little blood on there and when we’re away from each other we’ll wear the necklace,”‘ he said.

‘It was that easy. But by the time it came out in the press it sounded like we were wearing a bucket of blood around our necks,’ he added.

Their marriage lasted for three years before Thornton got his fifth divorce in 2003.

Upon reflecting on their marriage, Thornton had nothing but positive things to say.

‘I remember our time together as really being great,’ he said on the HFPA in Conversation podcast. ‘We just had different lifestyles. Hers is a global lifestyle and mine is an agoraphobic lifestyle.

‘So… that’s the only reason we’re probably not still together, maybe, because of a different path in life we wanted to take.

‘I look at that time as a great time. Angie is still a friend of mine and she’s a great person and she’s done so much.’

Thankfully, the sixth time was the charm for Thornton. In 2014, he tied the knot with actress Connie Angland in 2014.

She was best known for her roles in Men In Black (1997) and Planet Of The Apes (2001).

Meanwhile, he also kept working, starring in the Bad Santa franchise, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) and The Gray Man (2022).
