Ariana DeBose has defended her universally panned rap which opened February’s 76th EE British Academy Film Awards in London.

The Oscar winner, 32, told Time Out  that the song was ‘fun’ and she ‘owns every ounce’ of her perfomance.

Viewers declared they were left cringing when the West Side Story star took to the stage to spit lyrics about the female nominees.

She told the publication: ‘These lyrics were never meant to be Charles Dickens. They are what they are’.

Going on to say: ‘On TikTok people were asking about why [one lyric was] ‘Blanchett, Cate?’ It’s literally a play on Madonna’s “Vogue” rap’.

She also teased that she wouldn’t ‘shy away’ from the viral perfomance and would recreated it during her upcoming London and New York concerts.

Adding: ‘I still maintain what it was. It was just fun. I enjoy the memes. There are DJ remixes to this little rap’.

Following Ariana’s BAFTA perfomance one viewer wrote on Twitter:  ‘P***ing myself laughing at Ariana DeBose’s BAFTA song, why did this happen?’.

With another adding: ‘Absolutely awful she wouldn’t get a ingle turn on [talent show] The Voice’.

More agreed writing: ‘It was awful’ and ‘God-awful’.

Another said: ‘Got a lot of time for the celebs who smiled charmingly and awkwardly during Ariana DeBose’s painful BAFTA rap’.

And: ‘Ariana DeBose doing an absurd rap about the women up for things. She is, however such a pro (non more pro) so hardly matters’.

Following the ceremony the star leaned into the flack that she received when she poked fun at herself at the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Sheathed in a hot pink suit, she presented the award for Female Actor in a Drama Series alongside Diego Luna, 43, which went to Jennifer Coolidge for her acclaimed role in The White Lotus.

But before they popped open the envelope and read Coolidge’s name, DeBose looked at Luna and said: ‘Diego, do the thing.’

Ariana was referring to a bewildering lyric in her infamous BAFTAs wrap – ‘Angela Basset did the thing’ – and her cheeky joke at the SAG Awards earned a seal of approval from the star herself.

Laughing in the audience, a beaming Angela Bassett, 64, waved at the West Side Story star and blew her a supportive kiss.

Ariana’s self-deprecating moment earned rave reviews on social media, where she was brutally roasted one week ago.

‘Yaaaaaas. She did the thing,’ wrote one Twitter user, while another fan declared: ‘Awww I loved how Ariana DeBose shook it off and made it fun cuz Angela did do the thing!’.

She also defended her ditty on the Zoe Ball’s BBC Breakfast Show shortly after the event.

In the interview the American actress explained that she was told her performance would ‘celebrate women,’ and she ‘had a blast’ despite viewers’ negative reaction.

Zoe told Ariana: ‘Can I just say, our listeners, we all loved your performance. And that whole [reaction]… I don’t know what happened there?’

Clearly agreeing with the host, Ariana added: ‘You know what? You might be one of the few, but I’ll take it… because you’re my people!’

Continuing to heap praise on the performance, Zoe said: ‘It was a woman singing and dancing, being magnificent celebrating women on a stage. Come on!’

The Hollywood star added: ‘That’s what I wanted to do… honestly… it’s not like I was like ”Hey BAFTA… let me in”. They actually called me believe it or not (laughs). But that was the assignment, like come celebrate women, and I was like ”absolutely!”

‘And we did that and it was fun, not going to lie, I had a blast. So awesome. And then I spent the rest of the night like ‘cutting a rug’ with Emma Thompson… it was fabulous… I had a great time.’

As Zoe noted: ‘She has the moves doesn’t she by the way?’ Ariana added: ‘Oh she does. Don’t sleep on Dame Emma… like don’t!

‘But Baz Lurhmann came and found me, and he was like ‘no I think you’re great, that was fun. I had fun’ and I was like ”WERK”… that’s a win you guys. And apparently gay Twitter seemed to like it. So that’s good… I’ll take it!’

Adriana will be headlining the London Palladium April 1 before NYC at the David Geffen Hall April 8.
