Johnny Depp sets Al Pacino and Riccardo Scamarcio for his next directorial effort Modi with filming starting this fall

Johnny Depp is setting a talented cast for his first directorial effort in 25 years – Modi – bringing in Al Pacino, Riccardo Scamarcio and Pierre Niney.

The news comes just weeks after both Depp, 59, and Pacino, 83, were spotted together in Paris for a screening of their 1997 classic Donnie Brasco.

Riccardo Scamarcio – best known stateside for playing Santino D’Antonio in 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2 – will play Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani in the biopic, via Deadline.

Niney has been cast as French artist Maurice Utrillo with Pacino playing international art collector known as Gangnat.

Production is slated to begin this fall in Budapest, with the project being sold by The Veterans at the Cannes market this month.

The project will follow painter and sculptor Modigliani during his time in Paris in 1916, particularly during a, ‘turbulent and eventful 48 hours’ in the City of Lights.

Those two days will find Modigliani on the run from police through the streets and various bars of Paris, in the midst of World War I.

He is trying to leave the city and his art career behind during this chaotic time, though his fellow artists – Utrillo, Chaim Soutine and his English muse and lover, Beatrice Hastings – try to convince him to stay.

The artist also seeks advice from art dealer and friend Leopold Zborowski though it’s his meeting with a collector that could change his life for good.

Depp will direct from a script by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, which was adapted from a play by Dennis McIntyre.

Barry Navidi will produce, marking his fourth collaboration with Pacino, following 2004’s The Merchant of Venice, 2011’s Wilde Salome and 2013’s Salome.

‘This is a snapshot of Modigliani’s life that gives us insight into his struggle as an artist suffering from lack of recognition, and a project Al and I have pursued for many years,’ Navidi said in a statement.

‘Our incredible cast, coupled with the vision, wit and sensitivity I know Johnny will bring behind the camera, will make this a dream come true,’ Navidi added.
